My Sunday night can be pretty much summed up from what Robert Kirkman wrote in one of his mailings:

Quote:
Oh, what the hell, it's been a while, how about two mailings in one day.

I mentioned I did a panel with Grant and he seemed like a totally awesome dude... so that was neat, but I want to tell another story involving Grant, because it's good that it get out there.

I was at the Hyatt bar on Sunday night, chatting with a few people and hanging out after the con and I was getting ready to walk over to my room but a fan whom I'd picked on for wearing a pink shirt at the Emerald City con was sitting at a table with three of his friends and he called me over. I recognized him but couldn't remember from where until he mentioned the pink shirt. He actually witnessed me signing my first ever breast at the Emerald City con when I was next to Skottie Young's booth (getting his run off) but that's a whole other story. So I sat down with this group of guys and we were chatting about comics and what not. At some point they pointed out that Grant Morrison was about twenty feet away at the bar hanging out of J.G. Jones and that they'd told their waitress to open up a tab for Grant that they would pay--and she did... and Grant drank a bunch of booze that they paid for... and never even thanked them or even looked their way.

So Grant Morrison's a dick, right?

WRONG.

They were a little upset he'd never thanked them and so I said I'd get to the bottom of it. I had the panel with Grant, I knew he knew who I was... so I went over to investigate. I grabbed Grant by the shoulder (after a few minutes waiting for an opening) and pulled him aside. I pointed over to the guys and told him that they'd bought him a bunch of drinks and I just wanted to let him know. I didn't want to pull him away for J.G. or anything... I thought I might get him to give them a wave or something and I figured he knew they bought him drinks but hadn't had the time or the opening to acknowledge them. It turns out--he had no clue. He didn't know WHO had been paying for the drinks and just assumed it was J.G. or any of the other ten people he'd been hanging out with for a few hours. So Grant walked back over to the table with me, totally thanked those dudes and had a brief chat with them. It was all very cool of him to do.

The reason I'm telling this story is that when creators are at a con--there's a billion opportunities to come of like a total asshole. If it happens more than once and fans tell those stories online... you can get labeled as a jerk.

Most of us aren't jerks. Some are... sure... but most of us are totally nice guys and gals.

You never know when someone's wife has called them to tell them they want a divorce or when someone's twenty minutes late for a meeting with their boss and are afraid they're hurting their career... I mean there's a billion different reasons why a creator could have been short with you or stand offish or whatever... and sometimes, Grant Morrison just has no damn clue who paid for the booze... but if he did... he'd totally thank them.

-Robert Kirkman

Yep. Mr. Pink-Shirt is me. I'll post a more detailed version of the night at another time. But for now, i'll let you guys stew on this a bit.

Thank you for passing on the tale.

For some reason I'm now picturing you as ninja in pink-clothing.

Wow.. awesome story, man! Man, I really wish I made it to that Sunday night get-together. Kirkman actually sat with you guys for a bit? Nice.

Man, wearing that pink shirt really paid off.
